I haven't been using RPG maker long, but I'm going for VX for its simplicity. I only started using it about a month after I joined this site.

Same as Valkill; VX is simpler...
and even creating charsets/other content is less troublesome. tongue.gif

My question pretty much stands out, and this is an open question to all: Which do you prefer? VX or XP? And why? (please be detailed)

Creating charsets and tilesets etc for all the makers is the same as each maker before that. You just have to be more detailed with xp and vx.

I started using Maker last summer. I first started with RPG Maker 2 for ps2 but didn't like it. I always loved Rpgs and wanted to make one but never got around to it. I found RPG Maker VX last spring and then made a test game to learn it. After that I pretty much spent all summer messing around with it and started to look back at the other makers down till 2000.

I remember downloading an RPG Maker 95 game called the Legend of Goku Jr, or something like that. That sort of clued me in about indie games and stuff, it wasnt until I was about 14 when I downloaded RPG Maker 2000 from some Thai based site, and I remember being frustrated with it, because I couldn't use it because I didnt have the RTP. When I did find it, my jaw dropped due to its size, which was what? 20 megabytes? Anyway it was a big number for me, because I was stuff trapped in that pit of despair known as 56k internet. I started doing some beginner stuff, learning about switches and variables for basic things like doors and chests. After I got those down, I started becoming a bit more adventurous, learning tutorials on how to make stuff like Side View CBS's (which was a bit overwhelming for me at the time, but I learned heaps).

My infatuation with CBS's started with a Final Fantasy Fangame (I forget what it was called, but it was a fantastic demo), and I also remember downloading a Dragonball Z game from the old Dark Dominion website, it was called Light of Fury I think, and to this day, it's been one of my favourite fangames yet, it had great graphics and a kick ass CBS. I nearly gave up on CBS's, because no matter what the tutorial said, it would never work for me. That was until I discovered RPG Maker 2003.

2003 was a dream for me, 1 large download, but at least the graphics were prettier, and to my intense pleasure already had a side-view battle system built in! "Perfect!" I thought, "Now I can make some DBZ Games!" So I started looking for resources. Eventually I came across either a Geocities or a Freewebs site for NinjaofShadows, who had some DBZ RTP styled charsets and DKirbyJ's website which had some very nicely shaded LSW Battlecharsets. Tinkering with those, I then discovered that the Legacy of Goku stuff has been ripped from the game, so I found the Picceta forums (which is pretty much the 1 stop shop for DBZ RPG Maker). Since then (for 4 years), I've been spriting, mapping, ripping, ect everything DBZ LoG. I doubt I'll ever stop with DBZ until I have at least 1 fangame out. I've been at Picceta's for over 4 years now.

There's a load more, but I cant really remember much.

1. Lack of time (RPG maker makes things so much faster)
2. Lack of design (RPG maker looks better!)

And it looks fun!

it was the year 1998, i just recently got into computer gaming thanks to my uncle and i was always a gaming nut since when i had my genesis and owning mk3 was the big dick card. I given a cd "1000 greatest windows games" or something like that and i noticed that most of them in the doc were made with a program called "click n play" so i downloaded that and was like "oh yeah son shit is goin down" and printed out the entire 35 page manual and brought it to school to brag about this program i found and showed my friend and he was like "thats wack son, check out dis shit" and he showed me rpg maker 95 and his game he made with it (his "company" was jester labs) then i found dons and i got hooked and been here ever since

Well mines simple its because of the simplicity and starter resource you get just by installing it. And plus a lot of people made alot of resource that these makers could use.

I started playing (yeah... playing with an editor... ironic, isn't it?) with RPG Maker 98 back around 2000 at my friend's house.
They didn't understand a thing about it, but I was curious and tried it. (Anyone remember when they did their FIRST chest evenement?) It tooks me a couple of years after to restart using it and found out about RPGM2K. A couple of months later, 2K3 went out.
After, RPG Maker 2 as well as Fighter Maker came into shop store around my place for the PS2. (used and really rare!).
I didn't liked those 2.
I liked 2k3, while it was an hell of a time to get how the new fighting graphic system worked.
Not long after, I bought RPG Maker 3 (PS2). Kind-a-liked it since it was simple. (but DAMN! It needs a PS2 HDD to actually create something for PC!!! There haven't been any made since YEARS! When I asked a shop, they were like "WTH? Did something like that ever existed?")
Once XP went out, I got to see it with the high quality Japanese RTP (never found them anyway after)
I was charmed.
Since then, I tried many things. As VX went out and I no play with VX. (I find it more friendly-user than XP... even if we have to script battlers.)

Why did I decided to use RPG Maker? Well... since I'm a hardcore player, when it comes to RPG, it's always something interesting to think "What would I do, if I could make my own RPG?".

On another side, it's because of RPG Maker that, today, I'm working on some serious stuff related to some Manga.

So, my own point of view over the question "Why did you decide to use RPG Maker?", I would simply add "Why would a writer start writing?"
The base of everyone who started to use it is simply : To Make RPG! laugh.gif

Pretty much what don said.

I started with XP. Just to make an RPG. I had an idea for a big one for awhile then, and I wanted to give it a shot and build it with XP. It didn't last long. It was a shitty ten minute game. But eh... it felt like something to me.

I've always just had a casual/hobby interest in RPG Maker. I stumbled upon 95 and its translation by accident looking for something else and downloading it on a whim. RPG's always have and always will be my favorite genre of video game so it was fun to fool around with creating one. I remember once meticulously putting in rewards for searching objects inside rooms of every building in cities. I can also remember fun stuff like first figuring out how to use a timer type thing in 2k and making a scenario where you have to escape a crumbling castle.

It all started back in early 2008, where I was stumbled upon deciding what to become and what to do in the future... at first, I decided to be a programmer which constantly kept getting pushed back because of time and issues to deal with. Until a friend of mine helped me found my goal... Game Maker (title of job, not the engine).... even though I started using GM long ago just never realised what to do smile.gifanyhow, that friend of mine told me about RPG Maker and wha la, downloaded it and liked (thumbs up).

Used RPG Maker VX as my first engine and apparently its quite nice to be able to put something creative into an entertainment application.

P.S: all that was just to hype it up as a short story biggrin.gif

It all started back in 93, when my mom got me an SNES for christmas. two years later I got FFII (Which is actually IV, just saying...) and that cemented it: I became RPG obsessed. I decided from there that's what I wanted to do. In 2005 I rediscovered the design process when a friend gave me a data disk containing RM2MK. I began designing my first game (redesigning it to put here, will be okay) later that year with the help of my fiancee. When she passed, I decided that I needed to finish that game, and I have. It's not much, but ehh. I have since gotten all the makers (and SRPG95, Thank you Elemental Crisis!) and am working on my upcoming series, Sacred Twin Stories.

I enjoyed lots of XP features.

I really can't stand for the map creation system on VX. So little freedom in the tilesets ...
