What do you think of RPG Maker VX, based on what we've seen on the trial?

It's too early to tell.

When I get my hands on a copy of the Japaneses version I'll make my judgment. Until then I'll continue messing around in RPG Maker VX.

From what I've seen, I (personally) say it's the best. That's only because I like the old Dragon Warrior battle system and kiddy graphics.

It looks awesome, but until more is known I'll just say staying with XP.

Then why post the comment what on earth is the point... lol
I personally love it although they could have done a lot better on the layers and the midi output area so 8/10 kudos EB!

I don't like VX, seems to be a toy tool, too much restrictions and simplifed, ugly looking mapping.

Now that VX is released in Japan, I can make a better judgment. A truck should be arriving with my copy in a few hours. (IMG:https://rpgcrisis.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

It's brilliant! It does have some downfalls to XP, however I think the pros outweigh the cons in this case.

Now that I've used the full version I can properly say that this maker has some pretty nifty stuff. I could honestly sit down and make something with this. Now I just have to see what's different between RGSS1 and 2.

I've finally decided to give it a fair shot and after playing with the full version for a while I've come out with mixed feelings.

Things I liked:
  • The sprites. They're freaking adorable...
  • The message windows. I even liked the default window set enough to rip it for use in RM2k3/RMXP.
  • Being able to easily change Passages while mapping.
  • The animations. Looks like they've stepped up the quality yet again.
  • The icons and how easy it is to use them.
  • The script editor returning.
  • A "Dash" ability as a built-in function.
  • Quick Events.
  • Mass Text Entry and faces in message window events.
  • Organized Event Commands.

Things I disliked:
  • The game resolution. 544x416? What the hell?
  • The UmePlus Gothic font.
  • The RTP music. Isn't the music supposed to improve with each release? This music is almost identical to RM2K.
  • The RTP sound effects. They're just...terrible.
  • The RTP battlers. They seemed to be going for a more cutesy look with VX, so using these "DnD"-style battlers just doesn't work in my opinion. They should have gone with a more Japanese anime style. Even setting that aside they're still not the most impressive things I've seen.
  • The Dungeon Generator. It sounds cool in theory but really all it does is create a crappy map. The generator is going to be abused instead of people learning how to create a decent map on their own. I can't say I'm looking forward to all the RMVX games that are going to be released in the future.
  • The battle system. I wasn't expecting any different but come on Enterbrain. When are you going to surprise us with something new?

VX seems really great to me. But XP is at the moment my favorite one but of course I'll give it a shot.

I think its pretty cool but yeah the default sprites look pretty small and I don't quite like the battle system either. I kinda prefer Rm2k3 more

I don't like the battle system on RM2K3 too much. I prefer a custom battle system. It shouldn't be big of a deal if the RMVX default fails to suit your fancy.

Also for VX's backdrops: what were they thinking?

Honestly, I like it a lot and am using it as my default maker. Yes, there are quite a few things wrong with it, but the parts I hate most can be glossed over with a few scripts. My irks that I've fixed with scripts hovering around or resources:

*The battle system (using a side-view now)
*The battle backgrounds (using a script to use the RMXP backs)
*The terrible RTP music (added the default music from RMXP to the VX RTP)
*The sound effects (added defaults from XP to VX RTP, as well as some FF7 and other game SEs)
*The Gothic-whatever font (using Comic Sans MS at the moment)

I think the dungeon generator will be abused, but I think if used properly it can be used to give beginners a view of what on the tileset are floors, walls, and ceilings. When I first looked at the tileset it took a bit for that to get sorted in my head.

I love the return of auto-vehicles. I also like the quick events. There's also a lot of Database customizability that I like. (yes, I made up a word.)

Considering I was very good with RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 VX feels like I'm using those makers again. I never got into RPG Maker XP so I don't feel like I missing some features.

I do however hate the music and sound effects used in VX, I hated the music and sound effects in 2000 and 2003 and after so much work was put into XP it's a shame to see them go backwards.
