RPG Maker 2000 was seen as a vast improvement over it's predecessor and is often credited as the maker many veteran RPG Maker users first started it. It offered many new options and opened up possibilities that were once considered impossible with RPG Maker 95. The popularity of RPG Maker 2000 created a mindset that nothing was impossible and limitations such as the battle system and menu system become challenges that the community was able to overcome. To this day it's still considered the most popular entry into the ever growing RPG Maker series with nearly double the available content than the last three RPG Maker releases combined.

Various rumors had been floating around about a new RPG Maker that had caused quite a stir in the RPG Maker community. When RPG Maker 2000 was eventually announced, the majority of the maker community were ecstatic and almost immediately everyone began to wonder if Don Miguel would translate the new maker. With Don Miguel's announcement that he would be translating RPG Maker 2000, the community went crazy and Don Miguel became a name every RPG Maker user knew. Often considered the golden age in RPG Maker history, the release of RPG Maker 2000 saw the RPG Maker community explode overnight with hundreds of new sites dedicated to RPG Maker 2000 popping up, with some of those sites even around today. Content poured in from all over flooding new users with vast amounts of materials, tutorials and games to use and learn from. This period also saw the birth of many foreign RPG Maker communities that used Don's translation as a base to translate into their native language. There was one commonly agreed upon issue with RPG Maker 2000 and that was it's downgrade in resolution that caused a lot of older users to either stick with RPG Maker 95 or eventually loose interest and leave the community.

During the golden age, the RPG Maker community took a huge hit when Don Miguel announced that he had been sent a letter from ASCII's lawyers informing him that he was going to be charged with copyright infringement and illegal distribution of RPG Maker 95 and RPG Maker 2000. The community panicked and many sites took down download links for both programs and banned users asking where to download the programs even though most of these sites were still producing content for RPG Maker 2000. Shortly afterwards, Don Miguel informed the community that he had found a loophole in Russian laws and thanks to that loophole he was able to get the charges dropped. In response, ASCII released an online letter in English stating that if the illegal translations continued, they might not be able to create any more maker programs. Don Miguel also announced that he would be leaving the RPG Maker community and hoped that one day there would be official English translations of future versions of RPG Maker.

It should be noted that in-between RPG Maker 95 and RPG Maker 2000, ASCII released RPG Maker 97, RPG Maker 97+ and RPG Maker 98. For unknown reasons the English community was either never aware of these makers or they were but nobody was willing to purchase them and translate them. However, even Enterbrain does not acknowledge these makers as RPG Maker 2000 is listed as the successor to RPG Maker 95.
