Windows Vista and Windows 7 have been known to have issues with compatability with a few programs that I have used in the past (3d studio max being one, and I am too cheap to buy an updated copy). Some people like to use a dual boot OS option for their windows PCs because of these problems, however, here is a way around a very common issue with RPG Maker XP. For now, you may either update to the 1.04 client (which you can download and use a valid activation key from the enterbrain website) or if you are, for some reason, stuck with 1.02, adjust a few settings in the properties for the program itself. This tutorial assumes you have no working knowledge of Windows Vista/Windows 7.
- Your first step would be to open up your explorer folder. Click on the blue circular button at the bottom left of your screen with the windows logo (the multicolored flag.)
- Upon seeing the menu pop up, look on the right column for "Computer." Click on that.
- What you should see now are things such as "Local Disk (C:)" and "CD Drive (D:)" or something with similar letters. Double-click on the "Local Disk (C:)" to browse to your operating system's base directory (C: is generally the partition in which your operating system is run on).
- From there you should see "Program Files." Double-click on that.
- Here, you will search for the folder "Enterbrain." When you find it, double click on that. In that folder, you should see another sub-folder that says "RPGXP." You will, yet again, double click on that folder to enter the root directory for RPG Maker XP.
- Look for the RPGXP file that has the orange colored icon with the dragon (looks similar to the icon you would normally click when running the application).
When you see this, far to the right, you should see it says "Application." That is an indicator that this is the file we will be working with. Right-click on the name "RPGXP."
- A smaller menu will pop up where your mouse was. Move your mouse to the bottom of this menu and Left-Click on properties. The RPGXP Properties window will come up.
- Here, you will see a few tabs, "General," "Compatibility," "Security," "Details," "Previous Versions," etc. Click on the "Compatibility" tab.
- You will see some check-boxes on this tab. Click on the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" to put a check in it.
- In some cases, the text right below it will say "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)." This is the dropdown menu, which has a list of different major reiterations of the Microsoft Windows Operating systems. Some programs require specific comaptibility options, so you will click on the arrow next to these words and select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" for this program in particular.
- Toward the bottom, you will see a section labeled "Privilege Level" which has only one option. Click on the box next to "Run this program as an administrator" to put a check in the box.
- Click Apply and then verify the changes I told you to make have been made and nothing remains unchecked or selected. When you are certain of these changes, click "OK."
- Run RPG Maker XP and enjoy.
